Fraunhofer FOKUS is among the leading international research institutes in the field of information and communication technology and is headed by Prof. Dr. Manfred Hauswirth. At Technische Universität Berlin, he holds the chair of "Open Distributed Systems". The main research area of Fraunhofer FOKUS is the practice-oriented research and implementation of digital networking. Since 1988, Fraunhofer FOKUS has been supporting commercial enterprises and public administrations in shaping the digital transformation by providing research services ranging from requirements analysis, consulting, feasibility studies and technology development to prototypes and pilot projects. With its business units Digital Public Services, Future Applications and Media, Quality Engineering, Smart Mobility, Software-based Networks, Networked Security, Visual Computing and Analytics, Fraunhofer FOKUS covers the central areas required for the development of ICT-based infrastructure in networked environments. Fraunhofer FOKUS is an essential neutral partner for companies and public administrations and is active in a wide range of key international standardisation bodies.

Research

Within the field of science, Fraunhofer FOKUS is regarded as a renowned cooperation partner in research programmes of the European Commission as well as national funding bodies such as the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Action (BMWK), the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Home Affairs (BMI) and the Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport (BMDV). FOKUS scientists collaborate closely with German universities, especially Technische Universität Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and many of the world's leading universities. Its deep integration into the university research environment is evident in the large number of FOKUS chairs and associated departments. Through its research and development work, Fraunhofer FOKUS makes significant contributions to the international competitiveness of Berlin, Germany and Europe.
