With approximately 1,200 employees, the Branddirektion Frankfurt am Main is one of the largest departments in the city. It is made up of the professional fire brigade, 28 volunteer fire brigades and the rescue dog team. The Frankfurt Fire Department not only responds to fires, it also handles other emergencies such as accidents, storm damage and flooding. Another particularly important aspect of the fire department's work is preventive fire protection designed to minimise the risk of fires and other emergencies. In addition, the Frankfurt Fire Department is the organisation responsible for the rescue service and is highly committed in this regard.
In addition to its emergency response work, the Frankfurt Fire Department is also involved in the training and education of firefighters and other first responders. Particular emphasis is placed on hands-on training to ensure optimal preparation in the event of an emergency.
Research
Together with partners from academia and industry, the Frankfurt Fire Department has been participating in third-party-funded research projects (BMBF) in the field of non-police emergency response and pre-clinical emergency medical services since the early 2000s. So far, the focus has been on immediate rescue in the event of a major accident with a mass casualty incident, research into physical stress during operations involving respiratory protection with regard to changes in core body temperature, pre-clinical ultrasound diagnostics in trauma and cardiovascular arrest patients, the use of supraglottic respiratory aids by non-medical personnel, standardising the transfer of emergency patients from the ambulance service to the admitting hospital, compliance with hand hygiene in the emergency services, to name just a few. We are very interested in using our experience for the optimisation of organisational processes and technical equipment used to avert danger to life and limb of the population. Do not hesitate to contact us for support with your research project.
