The Senate Department for the Interior, Digitalisation and Sports is responsible for constitutional and administrative law, constitutional protection, public safety and order, sports as well as state-wide or department-wide cross-departmental tasks. This includes administrative development and business process management as well as the management of information and communication technology, as well as citizens' and public order affairs and the hiring and training authority of the state of Berlin. Its subordinate authorities include, for instance, the Berlin Fire Brigade, the police and the Berlin Immigration Office.

For example, new challenges require innovative technical solutions and appropriate approaches to emerging problems. Whether it is the protection of critical infrastructure or the fight against terrorism and crime, scientific networking and research can make an important contribution to the development of relevant areas of homeland security.
The "Innovation, Science Networking and Research" working area of Department III (Public Safety and Order) is the central point of contact for security research in the Senate Department for the Interior, Digitalisation and Sports and is responsible for networking with partners from industry, science and research as well as other authorities. The department is responsible for piloting innovation projects, coordinating third-party funded projects, and accompanying research assignments in the context of topics related to the police, fire department, disaster management, and cybersecurity from the perspective of the Berlin municipality.
